In 2007, the Board of Directors of the Fredericton Playhouse initiated a program which honours the contributions of individuals to the performing arts in Fredericton.
The Playhouse Honours, now in its fourth year, was established to foster a deeper appreciation of the value that individuals can make to community life through their work in the performing arts (music, theatre, dance, spoken word, multidisciplinary arts). The honouree is selected annually by the Playhouse Board of Directors from nominees proposed by the public, recommended by a selection committee, and fêted at the annual Onstage Gala. As well, a permanent display has been erected in the west gallery of the Playhouse to recognize the recipients. This year’s honoree, Walter Learning, founded Theatre New Brunswick in 1968, creating the first professional theatre company in New Brunswick, and one of the longest running regional companies in Canada. He served as artistic director of TNB from 1968 to 1978 and returned as artistic producer from 1995 to 1999.
An accomplished actor, director, and playwright, Learning collaborated with critically acclaimed literary figure Alden Nowlan to produce several world premieres during his tenure at TNB. He also oversaw the institution of TNB Young Company, which has been bringing professional theatre performances to elementary, middle, and high schools in Fredericton, and in communities across the province, for over 35 years. His contributions also led to the establishment of TNB Theatre School in 1999, which currently boasts an enrolment of over 300 students a year.
The 2011 Playhouse Honours recipient is Walter Learning. He will be honoured at the OnStage Gala on Saturday, May 7, 2011.
Name-A-Seat
As a performing arts venue, our seats are the essence of what we are. In 2004, the Fredericton Playhouse replaced all the seats in the Fredericton Playhouse auditorium, used by thousands of patrons for over 30 years. The new seats were designed especially for concert halls and performing arts centres like the Playhouse. The upholstered back and cushioned seat offer ultimate comfort while the hardwood veneer featured on the rear of the seat backs, armrests and the front panel naturally enhances the house acoustics. Since that time, the new seating has since offered patrons a more comfortable experience while enjoy world-class entertainment.
With thousands of patrons attending performances at The Playhouse every year, it is understandable that the facility show signs of wear. Naming a seat in the Playhouse is a lasting way to help rejuvenate, enhance, and beautify Fredericton’s premiere performance venue.
Each seat you name will bear an engraved brass plate secured to the arm rest of the chair of your choice (depending on availability) and can be inscribed as you wish.
With a tax-deductible donation of $425, you can Name-a-Seat in honour or memory of a loved one, a new family member, a company, a special friend – or yourself! Dedicate a seat as an individual, a couple or a family; in the name of your children, grandchildren or parents; in the name of your business or service organization.
All funds donated to the Name-a-Seat campaign go directly towards the Fredericton Playhouse capital fund used for facility improvements and specialized equipment upgrades. Your generous contribution will help us endow a fund for the maintenance and upgrading for generations to come.
This unique commemoration will last the entire lifetime of the seat. But most importantly, the Name-A-Seat campaign is an ideal way to show your support for the performing arts in our community.
